Coconut Grove Temporary Housing and Cool pools - Swimming pools are as ubiquitous as the stars in Miami, but none is as beautiful as the Venetian Pool in Coral Gables. Located five miles south of the Miami airport, it was built in the Venetian-style of architecture in 1923 in a quarry pit dug for limestone used in local construction. Originally called the Venetian Casino, the 820,000-gallon spring-fed pool attracted such famous swimmers as Esther Williams and Johnny Weissmuller, and orchestras led by Paul Whiteman and Jan Garber serenaded swimmers and dancers under its vine-covered loggias, waterfalls, grottoes, shady porticos, palm trees and fountain. Lockers, showers and a café were added later. Today, the pool is on the National Register of Historic Places. Admission to the pool ranges from $5-$9.
