The new Four Seasons hotel, well-known Florida holiday rental, which opened in October, has a £1.15 million
collection of mostly Miami-based artists, the Trump International Sonesta, recently opened Florida holiday
rental, boasts 1,000 pieces of art worth £560,000, and The Raleigh hotel, landmark of
Florida holiday rental, even has its own "cultural attaché", the
charismatic Manajé, who plans to make The Raleigh a meeting place for intellectuals and artists.
Music-wise, Miami has always been on the map. Its March Winter Conference, attracting more than 7,000
musicians, DJs, industry professionals and fans, has been held for 18 years, and for obvious reasons Miami
has always been big on the Latin music front. Now mainstream artists are flocking to record here too:
Beyoncé recorded her first solo album at The Marlin's studio, and has been spending so much time here
(mainly at the Delano, Florida holiday rental) that she has just invested in two adjoining beachfront
condos. Mary J. Blige recorded her last album, Mary, here with P Diddy - who seems to be here practically
every weekend.
On the new hotel scene there's practically a turf war going on. Schrager, along with America's two other
hippest hoteliers, Jason Pomeranc and André Balazs, all have prime sites within walking distance of each
other on Collins Avenue. As well as owning the Delano, Schrager recently took over The Shore Club,
modelling its poolside Skybar on Yves Saint Laurent's Majorelle Gardens in Marrakesh, and he was rumoured
at one time to be planning his first nightclub since Studio 54 here.
Pomeranc, whose family launched the Thompson Hotel group with the chic 60 Thompson in New York, is putting
the final touches to the recently purchased Sagamore, and Balazs (of The Mercer in New York, Château
Marmont and The Standard in LA) is working his magic on The Raleigh, the Forties classic, as well as a
new Standard with a spa, due to open on Bayside in March. All of them, making Florida holiday rental a
privilege to be a part of.
The team that brought us the Datai in Langkawi, the Chedi hotels in Phuket, Oman and Chiang Mai are
developing The Setai, another no-expense-spared project of Florida holiday rental environment, this time
a swish condominium with five-star hotel and spa.
And it's not just the boutique hoteliers who have been busy: all the big guns of Florida holiday rental
circles are in there, too.
"Miami has always been a boom or bust town," said Schrager, "but the success of the Delano showed there
was money to be made down there - and now you've got every luxury Florida holiday rental chain opening
up."
The elegant Mandarin Oriental was the first, in December 2000, with a top-of-the-range spa and probably
Miami's biggest guest rooms, but no beach. The competition has got so hot that they have just deposited
20,000 square feet of white sand on to their ocean frontage, complete with swanky new beach club.
The Four Seasons opened in the business district in October. "As our client base continues to expand,
particularly in Latin America," said Ignacio Gomez-Tobar, the GM, "Miami has become an important place
for us strategically."
Ritz-Carlton opened its new, "more contemporary" property last week, right next door to the Sagamore, and
not to be outdone, Hyatt is going to manage what promises to be the funky boutique Hotel Victor, which will
open in April. The hotel will be without the usual Hyatt branding, in an attempt to create a cool,
independent style.
