Miami International Airport with its attractions
Built in 1928 as Pan American Field, Miami International Airport (MIA) ranked third in the USA in the number of international passengers. It's centrally located six miles west of downtown and eight miles west of Miami vacation apartments.
It's located on the north side of east-west Highway 836 (Dolphin Expressway) between two major north-south arteries, I-95 and the Florida Turnpike. A $480 million construction project is underway, with completion expected in 2007. The project will add 50% more space for shops, services, restaurants and airport facilities. It also will add a new bus station and improve connections with other public transportation, create a new parking garage, expand the people-mover system and improve airfield facilities.
The fastest way to get between terminals is via the Level 3 Skywalk. There's a multilingual information booth near the Level 2, Concourse E entrance. 4200 N.W. 21st St.; call 305-876-7000 from all Miami vacation apartments; www.miami-airport.com.
Currently, the airport still lacks significant shopping and dining opportunities relative to airports of its size and traffic, but even over the past year there have been noteworthy additions:
Miami vacation apartments and a quick bite at the airport - If you missed out on Cuban food - or Cuban coffee - during your stay in Miami, there's still time to try it at La Carreta, which has a full-service restaurant in Concourses D and a smaller site in Concourse E. Café Versailles in Concourses B, D and F carries lighter Cuban fare, including pastries and coffee. For sandwiches, juice, snacks and cases of citrus fruit, visit the Fruit Tree Café in Concourses C and D. Sam Adams in Concourse E and Budweiser in Concourse F have brew houses.
Miami vacation apartments and prove you were there - You can pick up last-minute Miami souvenirs at Miami Gifts (between Concourses F and G). Additional creatively named shops such as The Bookstore and The Men's Shop are located along the inside perimeter walkway from Concourse C to Concourse G.
Miami vacation apartments and get down to business - The Miami International Hotel, locally called the Hotel MIA, provides fax, e-mail, copying, and Federal Express service. Check with the front desk, opposite the entrance to Concourse E. The airport offers a full-service U.S. Post Office as well as a chapel and bank on Level 4, Concourse B. Have your shoes shined or hair cut in Concourse E next to the Hotel MIA.
Miami vacation apartments and getting downtown - Miami-Dade Transit operates a bus service (305-770-3131; www.miami-airport.com) The fare is $1.25 exact change and $.25 for transfers. However, the service area is limited and the travel is slow, so renting a car is a better way to go. In addition, rental rates are some of the most competitive in the country. All the major agencies have booths or phones on Level 1 near baggage claim. Taxis are another option, with a flat rate of $28 to Miami Beach's Convention Center and the hotels nearby, and a flat rate of $21 to the cruise ships. Call (305-888-4444) from all Miami vacation apartments. Downtown fares are by the meter and cost around $18 for a downtown trip.
