The Food
A helpful bellman at the Miami South Beach apart hotels I was staying in
touted Las Culebrinas as the new authentico Cuban place to eat. At first I suspected cousins and kickbacks, but
in the end took the chance. Roomy, decorated in tones of terra cotta and burnt sienna, the restaurant was pleasantly
noisy with families that kept arriving with young children. Miami may be a bilingual city, but that doesn't mean
everyone speaks two languages. The dish I ordered, ropa vieja, was copious, gorgeous and a pleasure bite after bite.
But where do adventurous Cuban-Americans eat? Cesar Trasobares, an artist who makes his work from shredded money,
favors Yambo, a Nicaraguan restaurant. Jolly, every square inch festooned with decoration, the restaurant offers
dishes so exotic we had trouble identifying their ingredients. As proof of how far we were from Miami South Beach
apart hotels $30 breakfasts, three of us -- my wife, Jod, Mr. Trasobares and I -- paid a total of $14.50 for lunch.
Seduced by the address - South Dixie Highway - from Miami South Beach apart hotels, I set out by car for Shorty's,
which has the reputation as the best ribs joint in town. My mistake was thinking of Miami as a small city and
believing that streets marked by numbers would be relatively finite. It wasn't long before I was cursing Miami as
flat, tacky and unending. But, at least in retrospect, this was a good corrective to the impression made by the
sliver of elegance that runs along the shoreline. Shorty's itself proved hilariously pragmatic. Long, shared benches,
rolls of paper towels every few feet, stacks of brown paper bags, for bones or take-home, affixed to the wall. The
food was fine, except that no food is worth that drive.
Fortunately, some of the best dining in Miami is an easy walk from any Miami South Beach apart hotels. Some
restaurants are on the Lincoln Road pedestrian mall, as vibrant and varied as Miami itself. Pacific Time, which
serves an exquisite iced tuna tartare, is by now an institution. But the restaurant Miamians kept inviting me to
is Nemo, at the end of Collins Avenue, which is architecturally so open that even inside you feel like you're
dining outdoors. The crispy duck leg confit, served with curried French lentils, bitter greens and grilled golden
sweet pineapple, was simply the best confit I've ever had.
I also loved the ''seared rare'' nori-dusted tuna served with a crispy ginger rice ball. The service tended toward
what the locals call ''Miami time.''
From Miami South Beach apart hotels we went to Azul, in the Oriental Mandarin in downtown Miami. It has become a
destination in itself, where an entire evening can be devoted to the tasting menu on the balcony overlooking
Biscayne Bay. Here the service is at once snappy and insouciant. The sommelier, who pops up with the wine for
each course, is charming. The four courses were spectacular, especially the quail filled with chestnuts, brioche
and huckleberry sauce. Only the dessert, spice-poached persimmon, was disappointing -- great date, bad kiss
good-night.
After a week of such varied eating, my stomach was like a stormy session at the United Nations. It longed for
something homey and familiar. Driving up Collins Avenue, I turned in to the Miami South Beach Apart Hotels, Eden
Roc hotel, a legend of my youth, and now, like its neighbor the Fountainbleu, both designed by Morris Lapidus,
recognized as a monument of American style. That would have surprised my grandfather, who came down in the 50's to
play the ponies and chase the fillies. But the day of the high-living, big-spending ganser macher is long over.
Apart from photos of Jerry Lewis and Milton Berle, the lobby has been redone to keep up with the new artiness of
Miami, and the beachside restaurant Aquatica could pass for one in Colombia or Brazil. The menu, however, still
features matzo ball chicken soup. Every cuisine has its beloved blandness -- polenta, grits, matzo meal. This was
mine.
