Trip Protection.
(also known as Trip Cancellation Insurance)
Why do I need travel insurance?
You can begin your trip without any travel insurance and be self insured. But did you know that if you become ill abroad the costs to treat you could be very high. How would you find a doctor? Where would you find appropriate healthcare facility? Where would you seek advice? Did you know that HMO's, PPO's and Medicare typically do not cover you abroad?
Travel Protection vs Travel Medical
Travel Insurance Protection plans typically reimburse your non-reimbursed travel expenses if an emergency occurs causing your trip to be canceled, interrupted or delayed. Travel Medical insurance is medical insurance designed to reimburse you for medical expenses incurred while traveling.
Trip Protection plans typically reimburse your non-refundable travel expenses if an unexpected crises (e.g., death, sickness, airline strike, travel company bankruptcy, among other crises) occurs before or during your trip causing it to be cancelled, interrupted or delayed. Plans often provide reimbursement for:
Trip cancellation, interruption & delay
Baggage loss and delay
Emergency medical expenses
Emergency medical evacuation
Accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D)
Repatriation of remains
Travel assistance services
Although the maximum benefit limits for medical expenses are generally not as high as in Travel Medical Insurance, many companies have recently increased these benefits and there is usually no deductible or co-pay.
Most plans exclude Pre-existing Conditions but will waive the exclusion if the insurance is purchased within a certain amount of time (7 - 21 days depending on plan) after payment of the initial trip deposit.
Recently some companies have changed their waiver qualification criteria. They state that they will waive the Pre-existing Condition exclusions if you purchase within 24 hours of making your final trip payment,
The cost of insurance or "premium" for Trip Protection plans is based on a percentage of Trip Cost, which is the amount of money that a traveler has pre-paid or is otherwise obligated to pay to a travel supplier (e.g., airline, travel agent, tour operator, hotel, cruiseline, Internet booking service) that might not be refunded if a trip is cancelled, according to the given circumstances and wording of the cancellation terms and conditions indicated in the travel purchase agreement between a traveler and travel supplier.
Rental car insurance, also known as collision damage waiver (CDW), may be included, or purchased as an upgrade, or purchased separately as a stand-alone plan.
